Core of "Windows 7" taking shape: meet the "MinWin" kernel
Eric Traut, one of Microsoft's chief operating system design engineers, gave a fascinating demo (WMV) recently at the University of Illinois, where he talked about where the Windows core is going and ended with a sneak peek at the kernel of the next version of Windows, known by the exciting codename of "Windows 7." The demo showed what Windows would look like if it was literally stripped down to the core, showing the kind of work that is going on to optimize the aging NT kernel.

Gah NT Kernal... I know Vista has been more of pain then what it is worth. I think Microsoft should have all of it's developers on fixing Vista.

No,i don't want to wait for windows 7...
Windows 7 will not be as huge as Vista because it will be coded from scratch, vista is huge while it has all the older versions of windows ''inside'' of itself...

RE: Core of "Windows 7" taking shape: meet the "MinWin" kernel
I think making the windows kernel smaller is a pretty good move for Microsoft, as this should make it easier to work with and much faster. As far as I know, the linux kernel is something like 40MB, so the new WinMin kernel is pretty good, at 25MB. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MinWin
Hmm, I wonder how long till this stuff is embedded into stuff like fridges. :P

MinWin kernel has also been demoed in a cut down version of XP.
It was shown at one of the developer conferences, and seemed to work nicely.
I hope they use it in the Legacy OS, if that's still even on track.
