Every so often I get the bug to try on turn on IPV6 at home eventhough I know the problems that come with that decision. anyways I was trying the intructions on the page below and it seem they list all window versions except 7 and voila it does not work. I have discovered that the ping6 command is now ping -6 but have not found any posts on what the ipv6 converted to in W7.

I'm using a router with DD-WRT on the edge and trying to get one W7 box to actually use ip6 out to the world.

any help is appreciated and any suggestions too.

It seems you are looking for information on how to enable IPv6 on a Windows 7 system when following instructions that primarily mention newer Windows versions. In Windows 7, the commands and steps for IPv6 configuration may differ slightly from newer Windows versions. Here is a summary of how you can enable IPv6 on a Windows 7 machine:

Enabling IPv6 on Windows 7:

  • Check IPv6 Support:
  • Confirm that your router (DD-WRT) and Internet Service Provider (ISP) support IPv6. [*Manual Configuration:
  • Open the Network and Sharing Center.
  • Click on "Change adapter settings."
  • Right-click on your network connection and select Properties.
  • Under the Networking tab, check if "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)"...

  • Under the Networking tab, check if "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" is listed. If not, you may need to add it. [*Adding IPv6 Protocol:
  • To add IPv6 to your network adapter:
  • Click "Install" -> "Protocol" -> "Add."
  • Select "Microsoft TCP/IP version 6" and click OK. [*IPv6 Commands in Windows 7:
  • While the ping6 command is not available in Windows 7, you can use ping -6 to ping IPv6 addresses.
  • There isn't an exact equivalent to the ipv6 command, but most IPv6 configurations can be managed through the GUI. [*Testing Connectivity:
  • After configuring IPv6, you can test the connectivity by trying to access websites that support IPv6, like https://ipv6.google.com/.

Suggestions:

  • Update Network Drivers: Ensure your network adapter drivers are up to date to properly support IPv6.
  • Router Configuration: Check if your DD-WRT router is configured to pass IPv6 traffic.
  • Firewall Settings: Adjust firewall settings to allow IPv6 traffic if needed.
  • ISP Support: Contact your ISP to confirm if they provide IPv6 support for your connection. By following these steps, you should be able to enable and configure IPv6 on your Windows 7 computer and establish connectivity to IPv6-enabled websites. If you encounter further issues, updating drivers and checking router settings should help resolve them.
