I have a laptop (Asus K55D) with two OS, Windows 8 and 7, operating through a KVM switch (trendnet tk-409). It is also connected to a Linux machine. Linux machine works fine. When booting the laptop, the Bios and the boot selection work fine too, and so does Windows 8 when booted. But when booted into Windows 7, while the display works, the keyobard and mouse do not. (If there is a problem, and Win 7 presents the "You did not shut down cleanly last time, maybe you want safe mode" menu, it works there too!) Any thoughts?

Solution
It seems like you're facing an issue with the keyboard and mouse not working in Windows 7 when booting from your Asus K55D laptop, while both the BIOS and the boot selection menu function correctly. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this problem:

    • Visit the Asus website for your laptop model and look for the latest drivers for Windows 7.
    []USB Ports:
    • Ensure that the keyboard and mouse are connected to the correct USB ports.
    • Try switching the USB ports to see if the devices are recognized.

    ]Legacy USB Support in BIOS:
    • Check if "Legacy USB Support" is enabled in the BIOS settings of your laptop.
    • Enabling this option may help in recognizing USB devices during the boot process.
    []USB Compatibility Mode:
    • Switching USB settings in the BIOS from "USB 3.0" to "USB 2.0" compatibility mode might resolve the issue.
    [
    ]Check KVM Switch Settings:
    • Ensure that the KVM switch settings are configured correctly for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.
    • Try connecting the keyboard and mouse directly to the laptop to isolate any issues with the KVM switch.
    []Check Device Manager:
    • In Windows 7, check the Device Manager to see if there are any errors or warnings related to the keyboard and mouse.
    [
    ]Safe Mode:
    • Since the keyboard and mouse work in the Safe Mode boot menu, it indicates a possible driver issue.
    • Try booting into Safe Mode in Windows 7 and check the Device Manager for any conflicts or driver issues.
    []System Restore:
    • Consider performing a System Restore in Windows 7 to revert the system back to a point where the keyboard and mouse were functioning correctly.
    [
    ]Hardware Check:
    • If possible, test the keyboard and mouse on another system to ensure they are functioning properly.

      Summary:

These steps should help you diagnose and potentially resolve the issue of the keyboard and mouse functionality in Windows 7 on your Asus K55D laptop. If the issue persists after trying these steps, further troubleshooting or professional assistance may be needed.
