Microsoft has recently acknowledged a significant issue affecting enterprise environments attempting to upgrade to Windows 11 version 24H2 via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Following the installation of the April 2025 security update (KB5055528), devices running Windows 11 versions 22H2 or 23H2 have encountered failures when initiating or completing the upgrade process. Administrators have reported error code 0x80240069 in Windows Update logs, accompanied by messages indicating that the 'wuauserv' service has unexpectedly stopped.
WSUS, a tool introduced nearly two decades ago, enables IT administrators to manage and distribute Microsoft product updates across extensive networks from a centralized server. This service is predominantly utilized in business and enterprise settings, making the current update issues particularly impactful for these users.
In response to these challenges, Microsoft has confirmed the problem and is actively working on a resolution. The company has also addressed a related issue where certain devices were upgrading to Windows 11 despite Intune policies designed to block such upgrades.
This situation underscores the complexities associated with managing large-scale updates in enterprise environments and highlights the critical role of tools like WSUS in maintaining system integrity and compliance.
