Windows 7 Trying to replace windows vista with windows 7

Hey guys, not so sure if this is the correct section to post it in.

But my HDD broke not long ago, it had windows 7 on.

My friend gave me a HDD he isn't using anymore and it fits well into my laptop.

The HDD he gave me has vista on it.

I started up my laptop with my windows 7 CD and it came up,

Two options: Upgrade or custom advanced, I was stupidly tired and clicked upgrade, so now I'm on his vista with all of his stuff. I wanted the HDD completely cleaned and back to windows 7.

I've tried going into the manager settings of 'My Computer' to format. It's greyed out.

Anything you know I can do to get the windows options I got in the first place back? So I can properly wipe the HDD and get my windows 7 back.

You'll need an ISO of windows 7 and do a clean install from the advanced menu. Then use the product key from the existing laptop that was running windows 7.

Thank you, I'm about to try this. How will I go about finding the product key I was using for windows 7?

It should be on the bottom of the laptop.

So I've made the file into usb, put it on my usb. I'm on the laptop and I clicked setup.exe It says it can't because

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 or x64 version of the program."

Does that mean I need 32 bit? even though the original CD I had was 64?

What ever bit version the original OS was is what you have to use.
