Windows 7 DNS server not responding?

Hello

I have a router which is connected to a desktop (not wireless) and a laptop which is connected wireless.
On my laptop, i have internet, i have connections, i can browse the internet, but my computer says this :

Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding.

when i connect to the wireless internet, my laptop seems to be connecting, but taking longer than usual.

How do i fix this?

i have flushed the dns cache, and disabled IPv6

hey sorry if im re-opening an old thread but i really need help here, im having the same issue with the same error message although my situation is the other way around. i can connect to the internet when im running automatic find DNS server but i get the error message still when i diagnose, so i followed what you said and my DNS IP isnt 192.168.1.1 it is completely random so i manually changed it to the right one but then i cannot get an internet connection. its confused me alot now so im not sure what to do

i also have problems with my connection at the moment, i play games such as world of warcraft and whenever i go into high populated areas my internet lag spikes and then disconnects. im guessing this is because of the DNS issue im having? it dosnt just effect the game though it effects my whole internet so im not sure what is going wrong. by the way im running of a brand new desktop with pretty good specs also my internet is new, cable broadband netgear ultimate home modem so i dont see why im having such problems with it. its like the connection is worse then my older more crappier connection :S

It should generally be the same as your router IP address and in your case this is 192.168.0.1 - note the minor difference of zero instead of one. You may set this manually but by selecting "automatic settings your router should set it to that value for you. The lease time fr your IP address assignment also looks very short - your IP will need renewing about once every hour - not necessarily a great problem but you should look at your router and see if you can change the IP address lease time to some longer. Many router will let ou set the lease to expire "never". oh yes sorry i did put my 192.168.0.1 IP address in and still the same thing happened. i went into my modem settings to find lease time settings and i found under LAN IP a part called DHCP Client Lease Info, is this what im looking for? it has 3 different onces with MAC Address and IP Address and Expire dates? on the third one it has *STATIC IP ADDRESS* though?

i had a look into the lease timer and i cant change the timing on it so it dont think that is to much of an issue, the problem is this dns server error. ive tried everything and its not fixing it, doing it manually or automatic nothing is working please does anyone know what i can do to fix it?

I see you also have IPv6 enabled on your pc. It is very unlikely you are using it and it has been known to cause problems. You should disable IPv6.

Also, not sure what you mean by this expression: "but i get the error message still when i diagnose". If you are connecting ok to the internet with automatic address assignment why not just leave it at that?

It looks like the DNS is my issue as well. However when i went to the network and sharing center and then to change adapter settings to adjust the DNS, all i get is a blank screen. Help would be appreciated.

I re did the ipconfig after trying to tinker with the problem and now it has changed. my internet speed is also extremely slow recently getting round .5 mbps download and .2 upload. very clueless on what i can do at this point.

I had the problem for two days. Several systems restores fixed the issue for a short period of time. Checked for viruses in safe mode with networking. Internet worked just fine in a safe mode with networking... I also tried to tweak Mcafee Internet Security that came with my Dell laptop. Disabling firewall and antivirus did not work. Downloaded a couple other virus malware killers and scanned in safe mode with no luck. They could not find anything. Finally I uninstalled McAfee... And voila! I installed Microsoft Security Essntials: it is free and my Internet works!!! I used to work in a call centre for Dell: problems with McAfee blocking the Internet were a real nightmare. So, if you have this issue with DNS server not responding, look at your antivirus first... Do you really need that one particularly...

I spent 6 hours on this problem yesterday, trying everything, all the ipconfig commands, changing dns to opendns, rebooting router, reinstalling network driver etc no joy. I finally got it to work with the below:

-I unplugged by router/modem for two hours - apparently verizon takes that long to renew leases

-This is the weird part, I restarted in safe mode without networking and tried to trouble shoot the connections but of course it couldn't do anything because I didn't pick safe mode with networking. Anyway, I rebooted again but didn't catch the F8 in time for safe mode so it booted normally-guess what my internet came back

I don't know why this worked but it did, I'm not computer person but I know how frustrated I was yesterday so if this helps one person be less frustrated its worth it. Good Luck!

I am also having this problem with my XPS laptop. It says I am connected to the router but I have no internet connection. All other laptops work fine with internet. Troubleshooting the problem it says the DNS server is not responding. I have flushed the dns cache and restarted the rooter but it isn't helping. I'm trying to connect wirelessly. Hi! What antivirus / firewall do you have? That is your problem... You can try to twick it using help articles from the makers website. I decided to get rid of it... But first you have to download something to be protected...

Connecting your system to the router with a networking cable makes things simpler...

Get in XP/ Win 7 Safe moden with Networking: restart your system; as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" or just hit it continiously which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu"
Select Safe moden with Networking using arrows. Pess ENTER.
You Internet will be working this time.
Download Microsoft Security Essentials: it is free and will not cause any problems on Windows based computers. Restart your system.
Disconnect from the router/ turn it for now.
Uninstall your antivirus, install Microsoft Security Essientials. You should be good to go...

The DNS server address on your wireless connection is causing the problem:

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 24.201.245.77

It should be set to 192.168.1.1 (the address of your router - the router will then forward dns requests to the real dns server address from your service provider). You can either change this manually or (if the is no special reason for having manual settings) you could change the wireless adapter to obtain all addresses (IP address and dns server address) automatically.

Aren't you referring to DHCP servers instead of DNS? DNS should be 192.168.1.1.

I had just visited this as I noticed the DNS server issue today when I was reviewing my event logs. No McAfee software on my computers. All I've used for the last 3 years or so is MSSE & SUPERAntiSpyware, & neither have caused any trouble whatsoever. I was just pointing out what I felt to be an error in server terminology by the user posting about DNS, which I think that they meant DHCP. All done now... Thanks.

I am experiencing the same issue as all off above, but seems like non of the solutions works for me, i've had this since thursday and cannot figure out what seems to be the problem. im not expert on this so i would really appreciate some proffesional help here !

even tried to turn off the "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" with no luck at all.
