No, fn F7 doesn't work.

Go to Control panel, device manager, Mice and other pointing devices, right click on the touchpad device and disable.

The only option I have there is to uninstall it and I prefer not to do that because my wife sometimes uses it.

Unusual, which laptop and model is it?

It's an HP. Not sure what model.

That didn't work. Maybe because it was written in 2012. Must be different now.

Have you tried updating the driver - that may give you additional options.

I tried to but it told me that be best driver is already installed.

On some laptops its [fn] + [F9]

An image from 'How do I turn off my mouse pad?'. Mouse Properties window with option to disable internal pointing device when USB device is attached.

So your mouse doesn't have this screen?

p.s. This is the standard Windows 8.1.1 option but its not in Windows 8.
