I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask this on, but I have been having some major problems with my computer recently. I am dual booted with XP and 7 on two separate partitions.

We got the USB internet modem from Verizon Wireless yesterday to try it out, our house in the country can't get good internet service any way we try. This was working fine until today when I go to log in. XP is no longer recognizing the usb modem so I restart. The computer then says since there have been significant hardware changes and Windows XP needs to be activated again. I try to get the computer to recognize the modem so I can connect to the internet because XP is no longer recognizing my old connection, I restart, reinstall, everything and nothing works. Then I restart back into XP and it is telling me the Microsoft UI has a problem and I try to exit out of that, it says send error report, but it keeps popping back up. Then I can't log out, restart, shut down from the start menu at all.

Anyways, as of right now I am on Windows 7 trying to figure what happened to Windows XP. I found some trojans on XP with a SpyDoctor scan so I'm thinking they might be the cause of something, I don't know. When I boot into Windows XP all that comes up is the background image. I have Windows XP backed up on an external hard drive, am I looking at just having to reinstall Windows XP on the other hard drive and do a backup from my backup image? I have no idea how to go about doing that, but would that take care of the problem?

It sounds like you're experiencing multiple issues on your dual-boot system with Windows XP and Windows 7, particularly after introducing a USB modem from Verizon Wireless. Let's break down the problems you're facing and provide guidance on how to potentially resolve them: 1. USB Modem Recognition Issue in Windows XP: - It seems that Windows XP is not recognizing the USB modem after a restart, leading to activation prompts due to perceived hardware changes. - Possible Solution: - Ensure the USB modem is securely connected to the system. - Check in Device Manager in Windows XP to verify if the modem is detected. If not, you may need to install the modem's drivers on Windows XP. - If the modem was working fine before, try rolling back recent system changes or updates that might have caused the issue. 2. Microsoft UI Error and Inability to Log Out/Shut Down in Windows XP: - The persistent Microsoft UI error and the inability to log out, restart, or shut down point to a system instability issue. - Possible Solution: - Given that you found trojans on XP using a SpyDoctor scan, it's possible that these malware infections are causing system instability. - Running a thorough antivirus scan in Safe Mode on Windows XP to remove any malware is recommended. - If the issue persists, you may need to repair or reinstall Windows XP to resolve these system errors. 3. Windows XP Boot Issue - Showing Only the Background Image: - If Windows XP boots only to the background image, it indicates a severe system problem. - Possible Solution: - Reinstalling Windows XP might be necessary if the system is corrupted due to malware or other issues. - Using your backup image on the external hard drive to restore your system might be the most effective way to recover Windows XP without losing data. 4. Reinstalling Windows XP from Backup: - Reinstalling Windows XP from your backed-up image on the external hard drive is a good approach to restore your system to a previous working state. - Steps to Consider: - Boot from the Windows XP installation media and choose to repair or reinstall the operating system. - During the installation process, you can choose to restore from the backup image on your external hard drive to recover your system settings and data. Reinstalling Windows XP and restoring from your backup image should help tackle the issues you're facing. Remember to back up any important data before proceeding with any reinstallation to prevent data loss. If you encounter any specific issues during the process, feel free to ask for further assistance.
