I have an XP machine and a Windows 7 machine, which we are trying to remote into from the XP machine. Both machines are connected to our network, but only the Win 7 machine is on our domain. When trying to remote into the Win 7 machine form the XP with Remote Desktop 6.0, I'm getting error message 0x80090330. I have verified with my network admin that the login credentials are correct and still will not connect.

The XP machine is currently on service pack 2. Can anything be done without having to update the service pack?

The error code 0x80090330 that you are encountering when trying to remote into the Windows 7 machine from your Windows XP machine using Remote Desktop 6.0 is related to a protocol mismatch issue. The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) version supported by the older Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) may not be compatible with the security features or encryption protocols required by the Windows 7 machine. To resolve this issue without updating the service pack on the Windows XP machine, you can try the following solutions: 1. Update Remote Desktop Client on Windows XP: - Since you are using Remote Desktop 6.0, try to update the Remote Desktop client on the Windows XP machine to a newer version if available. This might resolve compatibility issues. 2. Enable Network Level Authentication (NLA) on the Windows 7 Machine: - Ensure that Network Level Authentication (NLA) is enabled on the Windows 7 machine. NLA is a security feature that can sometimes cause compatibility issues. Enabling it might help in establishing the remote connection. 3. Check Group Policy Settings: - Check the Group Policy settings on the Windows 7 machine to ensure that Remote Desktop connections are allowed and that the necessary security settings are configured correctly. 4. Use a Third-Party Remote Desktop Application: - If updating the Remote Desktop client doesn't work, you can try using a third-party remote desktop application that supports older versions of Windows like XP. 5. Consider Updating Service Pack (if possible): - While you prefer not to update the service pack, upgrading to at least Service Pack 3 on the Windows XP machine could potentially bring improvements and fixes that might help in resolving compatibility issues. Upgrading the service pack on the Windows XP machine to at least SP3 is generally recommended for security and performance reasons. If none of the above solutions work, consider updating the service pack as a more comprehensive solution. Try these steps and see if they help in establishing the remote connection between your XP and Windows 7 machines.
