A friend gave me Windows 7 on a USB disk. I created a new 16GB partition on my hard drive because i wanted to keep XP as a backup, then ran it from the USB. The installation ran fine, but now when I try to start the computer, all I get a message saying
Code:
BOOTMGR is compressed
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
I've know you can fix it by uncompressing it from within a command prompt, but my computer is a Compaq and it didn't come with CDs, just a recovery partition. When the computer powers up, I've tried to get into recovery to get to the command prompt there, but it won't load into recovery, so i don't know what the commands are and i don't have a way to get to a command prompt anyways.

my roomates girlfriend is bringing her laptop over so i can download them.

the only things i have plugged into my pc is the power cable, monitor, usb keyboard and wireless mouse..

i even took out my second gfx card and 3 of my 4 sticks of ram..

do you think linux will load on it? or will the old windows errors get in the way?

I had a similar issue with Vista, where it refused to do anything. I grabbed a linux live cd off the net and booted up using that. You will be able to see everything that is on your drive and copy the files off if needed. There are also disk utilities which will let you scan the drive. In my case the hard drive was fried and needed to be replaced.

You got nothing to lose - they are free small downloads:

Paragon Rescue Kit Express - Overview

Free Download Partition Wizard

yea i tried the partion wizard image and it didnt work. it brought me to te first screen to boot from the partion wizard. Then went to a screen with alot of scrolling black text and stopped after about a minute. my keyboard froze and it wasnt doing anything.

You won't know unless you try it.

Did you disconnect external devices?
