Hi there. I have a dual LAN on my motherboard and windows 7 installed. No.1 is connected to the internet and no.2 is my LAN. I connect a second computer with windows 7 to the LAN with crossed Ethernet cable. I have internet connection and file sharing on both computers, however the host computer shows the no.2 LAN card as Unidentified Network.

How can I change that?

Solution
To resolve the issue of the LAN card showing as an "Unidentified Network" on the host computer in Windows 7 while still maintaining internet connection and file sharing, you can try the following steps:

Steps to Resolve "Unidentified Network" Issue:

  1. Set Network Location to Home or Work:
    • When a network is set to "Unidentified Network," Windows categorizes it as a public network by default. This can limit sharing and cause other issues. Changing the network location to Home or Work can help:
      • Go to "Control Panel" > "Network and Sharing Center."
      • Click on the network name (Unidentified Network) next to the connection type.
      • Change the location type to "Home" or "Work."

    []Manually Set Network Profile:
    • If changing the network location doesn't work, you can manually set the network profile in the Windows Registry:
      • Open the Registry Editor by typing "regedit" in the Start menu search bar.
      • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles.
      • Look through the profiles listed to find and change the one associated with your LAN connection from "Public" to "Private."
    [
    ]Disable IPv6:
    • Sometimes, IPv6 can cause issues. Disabling it can help in certain cases:
      • Go to the Network and Sharing Center.
      • Click on the LAN connection.
      • Uncheck the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)."
    []Update Network Drivers:
    • Ensure that your network drivers are up to date:
      • Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager."
      • Expand the "Network adapters" section.
      • Right-click on your LAN card and select "Update driver."
    [
    ]Reset TCP/IP Stack:
    • Resetting the TCP/IP stack can also help resolve network issues:
      • Open the Command Prompt as an administrator.
      • Type netsh int ip reset and press Enter.
      • Restart the computer.

        Note:

        • It is important to always back up your registry before making any changes.
        • Ensure that your firewall settings allow for file sharing on your network.
        • Crossed Ethernet cables are not commonly used anymore. It is recommended to use a regular Ethernet cable or switch to a modern network switch for better compatibility and performance.
Try these steps and see if they help in resolving the issue of the LAN card showing as an "Unidentified Network" on the host computer in Windows 7.
