Windows 7 VPN connects but no network is shown

So I've went through countless tutorials on the net for the last few days trying to figure out how to set up a VPN between my Win7 laptop (client) and Win7 desktop (server) at home. I have the connections on both ends set up fine, I log in with my username and password and it says that I'm connected to the VPN on the client side but the details of the connection on the server side say that nothing is connected. Any help figuring this out would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

There is an easily alternative called team view. does everything. Has vpn, remote desktop, file transfer,etc and is free'

I really don't need anything fancy, I just need the damn thing to work! lol. I'll check that out though, thank you.
