Windows 7 Windows Explorer - cannot set a view

There does not appear to be a way of fixing a particular view for a particular folder. Every time I change the view in any folder it sets the same view for EVERY folder. I have followed the help files, and forked out for Steve Johnson's "brilliant Windows 7", in full colour, but nothing in them solves the problem. I am probably missing something, and will be very pleased to have my fumblings unfumbled.

I am using version 6.1 (Build 7600) of Windows 7 Home Premium on an Acer laptop.

Do you have a Music folder? Try opening that and see if the vie has changed.

In Folder Options, did you click the button to Apply to All Folders.

Try choosing restore defaults.

If that doesn't work, go back and customize it the way you prefer.

Yes, the view changes to whatever I set for something else.

Not consciously, but the only options available are "Apply to folders" (which by default appears to be highlighted), "Reset folders" and "Restore defaults". There is nothing (that I can see) that specifically says says "Apply only to this folder".

But I don't want defaults, I want a different view.

But!!! That means I have to do it every time I change a view in a different folder and then come back. Most exasperating.

I'll give you an example of my problem.

I have a desktop shortcut to "Games", and another to my "Pictures" folder.

My "Pictures" folder has many sub-folders, and it is very useful to have the Navigation pane on the left.

"Games has no sub-folders, and the navigation pane is a pain, I don't need it.

So in "Games" I chose "Organize", "Layout" and un-tick "Navigation pane".

Now close "Games" and go to "Pictures" shortcut, and I have no Navigation pane. Organize "Pictures" to have the Navigation pane and it comes back in "Games".

I'm sure I'm missing something. I seem to remember I could do it in XP. All further help appreciated.

Are you accessing these folders through the Libraries section in the left pane window?

The Library sector is new to me, only having been with Windows 7 for a
couple of weeks. For the most part I access things through Windows
Explorer. The desktop shortcuts I use for such areas of work as
Pictures were set up from Windows Explorer. Hope that helps you to
help me
